De Panne – Belgian coastal holiday with wide sandy beaches and unique nature
De Panne is known as Belgium’s westernmost seaside resort and is located directly on the French border. The destination attracts families, nature lovers and active holidaymakers alike because the town combines vast sandy beaches, peaceful natural areas and modern holiday experiences in a way that few other coastal towns in Belgium can match.
The biggest attraction is undoubtedly the beach. De Panne has the widest beach on the entire Belgian coast, and at low tide the sea opens up to a huge area of ??firm and even sand. The absence of large breakwaters provides a more natural and open coastal experience, which makes the area particularly popular with families with children, beachcombers and visitors who want long walks by the sea.

The atmosphere in De Panne differs from many other classic seaside resorts. The town’s architecture is characterised by green areas, villas and cosy neighbourhoods rather than dense concrete buildings. The Dumont district in particular is known for its elegant Belle Époque villas, winding streets and peaceful surroundings between the dunes.
Along the Zeedijk promenade, you will find modern apartments, cafés, restaurants and terraces with panoramic views of the North Sea. The combination of historical charm and modern comfort makes the city attractive for both short weekend stays and longer summer holidays.
The history of De Panne and the Belgian royal connection
De Panne was founded at the end of the 18th century, after Emperor Joseph II wanted to strengthen fishing along the coast. The first settlement was called Kerckepanne, which means “church in the depths of the dunes”.
The city also plays an important role in Belgium’s national history. In 1831, King Leopold I landed here before taking over the Belgian throne. This historical event has made De Panne a symbolic place in the country’s development.
At the end of the 19th century, the area quickly developed into an exclusive seaside resort for the aristocracy. At the same time, the Dumont family invented the first sailing boat on the beach in De Panne in 1898. For this reason, the city is still considered the birthplace of beach sailing and land sailing in Europe.
Westhoek Nature Reserve – Flanders’ wild dune landscape
Just behind the beach lies the impressive Westhoek Nature Reserve, which is the oldest nature reserve in all of Flanders. The area extends over approximately 340 hectares and consists of a fascinating dune landscape with both forest, open sandy areas and active dunes.
The nature reserve is divided into several different zones. The fossil dunes are older and covered with vegetation and forest, while the parabolic dunes are shaped by the wind into characteristic horseshoe shapes. The mobile dunes are the most spectacular, because the sand is constantly moving several meters every year.
To protect biodiversity, natural grazing with Konik horses and highland cattle is used, which helps to keep the landscape open and varied. The reserve is ideal for hiking, bird watching and nature experiences close to the sea.
Activities in De Panne for both children and adults
De Panne offers activities for all age groups, whether you are looking for relaxation or action. Beach sailing is one of the most popular activities, where visitors can whizz across the beach in specially built three-wheeled carts with sails. The strong winds from the North Sea create perfect conditions for the sport.
Another classic activity is the Belgian pedal go-karts, which can be rented along the promenade. Families and children often spend several hours on the wide bike and go-kart paths along the sea.
For those looking for a bigger adrenaline rush, the Plopsaland De Panne amusement park is just outside the city. The park is one of Belgium's biggest attractions and offers modern roller coasters, family rides and the popular water park Plopsaqua.
Local specialties and Belgian flavors
The food in De Panne is strongly inspired by the North Sea and classic Belgian cuisine. Many restaurants serve freshly caught fish and shellfish straight from the coast, and mussels with Belgian fries are among the most popular dishes.
Another local favorite is the garnaalkroketten, which are crispy croquettes filled with creamy sauce and small gray North Sea shrimps. This specialty can be found in almost all traditional brasseries along the coast.
For dessert, many visitors choose Belgian waffles, pancakes or handmade ice cream, which can be enjoyed on the beach promenade after a day at the sea.
